PAWS Lab | Physical Activity and Wearable Sensors Research Lab

Project KNOWN (Now Recruiting)

Please click here to find out if you are eligible for this study.

The purpose of this study is to test a physical activity intervention program that aims to help cancer survivors become and stay more active, using wearable sensors and receiving informative text messages about exercise. Participants will receive a Fitbit wristband that tracks their daily activity and a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM); which is a sensor that has a thin and flexible wire that inserts just under the skin.

To find out if you are eligible to participate in this study, you will need to complete a screener survey, either online or over the phone. Eligible participants will start the study with a 2-week monitoring period wearing a wristband activity tracker and a CGM. After this 2-week period, participants will be randomly (as in the flip of a coin) assigned to 1 of 2 study groups.

  • Participants in Group 1 will receive a Fitbit wristband to wear for a 12-week study period and informative text messages about exercise.
  • Participants in Group 2 will receive a Fitbit wristband to wear for a 12-week study period, a CGM to wear during the first 4 weeks of the 12-week study period, and text messages based on the sensor’s data.

After the 12-week study period, all participants will wear the wristband activity tracker and a CGM for 2 additional weeks.

Each participant is expected to provide a fasting blood draw, before and after the 12-week study period, at the University of Texas at Arlington campus. During these in-person visits, participants will receive and return their wearable study devices.

Each participant is expected to complete a set of online surveys before, during, and after the study and will be compensated for their time and effort upon the study’s completion.
